CHAPTER
I
THE
PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE
Introduction
Beauty
well-defined as a combination of assets and it differs country by country. We
live in a world where we are continuously under scrutiny and conscious about
our physical appearance. Such as color, shape, or form that pleases the appealing
senses, especially the sight. Whether you want to be thin, curvy, and fair or
tan, you will find it fascinating to see what the rest of the world is doing. In
several instance, Umberto Eco says that History of Beauty is really about the
history of philosophical and perceptual notions of perfection and how they have
been applied to ideas and objects, as well as to the human body. An ideal
beauty possesses structures widely attributed to a particular culture, for
perfection.
Furthermore,
the experience of beauty comprises of some entity as being balance and harmony
with nature, which may lead to feelings of attraction and emotional well-being.
For the reason that, it can be subjective experience usually, it’s said that
beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This implies in many different ways
across time and culture but this subjective concept has been adjusted so men
and women feel like beauty is objective. With the amount of confidence, it is
the ability to feel beautiful and naturally exude a balance of self.
The impact of having low confidence
can result in shyness, communication difficulties, social anxiety and lack of
assertiveness. However, some people seem to be naturally
confident but most of us need to improve our confidence and we have the power
to do so. In addition, a good self-confidence allows us to achieve the real
goals in our life whether we are to do with work, relationships or just being
comfortable with ourselves. Without self-confidence it's difficult to fulfill
your potential in any area.
On
the other hand, Beauty over the years has dramatically changed. People’s
perception of being beautiful at the past would not be considered as beautiful
as of today. They are now influenced more on the social media point of view and
the cultural influences. Beauty has been thought to be the pictures of our
physical attributes and leads on gaining inner happiness and satisfaction. The
person who feels good about oneself whenever he or she is said to be beautiful.
However, the real definition of beauty had been distorted and shadowed by
conflicting pressures of our society demands. Some would endlessly strive to
become beautiful in anyway, rather than focusing on the true essence of beauty
which is being contented of being you. Whenever people compared their own image
towards models and famous artist they start thinking of being not attractive
enough on the eyes of the people around them. They would rather try hard to
achieve the perfect hour glass figure, the sharp nose, big eyes, and many more
with any means.
As the saying goes beauty is in our hearts
and the way it shines through. We are completely unique individuals we have
different facial sorts we can say that we have our own versions in portraying
beauty. But, both men and women nowadays suffer from poor body image and low
self-confidence .They tend to use on cosmetics , going to a dermatologist,
using facial necessities , and others even find themselves on undergoing
plastic surgery or anything they can do to quickly and temporarily change their
appearance in the eyes of the people around them, thus increasing confidence.
An abundance of research studies have made on the influence of beauty
enhancements such as plastic surgeries and cosmetics has clearly made covered
the way of boosting self-confidence on the person.
According to Dr. Bethany Cataldi, local
otolaryngology and facial plastic surgeon, the impact of cosmetic surgery and
cosmetic enhancements on a person is great. “Overall it helps improve one’s
self-confidence, one’s self-esteem, and gives one a better quality of life,
“she explained. As for them physical appearance, is a kind of emotional
issue. A blemish on the skin can be an
embarrassment, humiliation, or other negative body-image experiences, which in
turn can diminish self-esteem. Our looks can also have this direct impact on a
person’s confidence and self-worth.
In fact, Self-confidence
is the conviction in oneself and abilities, it labels an internal state made up
of what we think and feel about ourselves. This state is variable according to
the situation we are currently in and our responses to events going on around
us. It is not uncommon to feel quite confident in some circumstances and less
confident in others that can prime to anxiety levels. In which, anxiety was castoff
as a portion of confidence. It is also swayed by past events and how we
remember them; recalling a former success has a very different effect in terms
of our confidence levels than thinking about an occasion when we failed. We may
have been melancholy from being boastful but a healthy amount of self-liking
and self-approval is necessary if we are to have the confidence to meet life's
challenges and participate as fully as we wish to in whatever makes life
enjoyable and rewarding for us. In a sense, we could say that having healthy
confidence leads to being self-assured.
According to Daniel Hamermesh says that, a
person’s physical beauty might be a reflection of his or her self-assured. Indicating
that beauty has a relationship with a person’s self-confidence in daily
lifestyle Thus the problem of people is how to achieve a kind of self-image
that would make them feel good about themselves. The image of that would be
inclined with the norms of the person.
The
purpose of this study is to distinguish if men and women who apply beauty
practices have more self-confidence than those who are not exposed of those
beauty practices. Through this study the participants would be able to know on
how to boost their self-confidence not only through their physique but also
internal necessities in the sense that on how they are going to cope those
internal trouble and facing daily challenges in terms of their work and
careers.
